Me and the mic...

7/04/2008 03:41:00 PM

Versatile, All-rounder, multifaceted... how does it sound? to others... awesome! isn't it? One thing I really like about an actor's life is that, they get to live one hectic yet so many lives if not in but virtually molded in one. Now I don't know if Hrithik Roshan while playing Akbar, enjoys being the king or living a life king size and last but no the least, learning and doing all that a king could have done, hence brightening his aura.

I was going through a general prediction of mine sometime back. and it read,

"Your greatest failing is that you are versatile and that your energies are directed into too many channels. Concentrate on fewer branches of work and pleasure, and you will greatly benefit by the change"

I see. So being versatile isn't always nice preferable. well, you cant concentrate on one thing.. you get bored too soon. you want to try too many things. all this happens and more, the result is while you could do everything and offcoz sometime perfectly too. but while you can sustain your thirst, you cant reach on top and be the best of all your skills.

there is another tendency of being perfect at everything. you can't just take it if its a little below your expections while its the thing which you, yourself are doing or something which your'e getting done from others. I happen to have this shortcoming too. and in addition to this, imagine if you're someone who's a fevi-quick ( as a friend of mine calls me), or the one who's like once your in to it you're only out once that thing is over. take an example, when I was creating this blog header, the sites' online tool was hanging every other time with out saving the card. So I happened to create the whole pic 5 times. and it took me two days of sitting (since its not my full time job) to really get it done (most of the people wouldnt' believe it though) but I am quite happy with my product and i am hoping i am not goint to get bored of this soon enough to change it again. Well, all the perfectionists don't really the good label like Amir Khan, Like I was reading somewhere long back. that All of virgo's typical traits were labelled the best ones in ancient time but are of no use in the contemporary world. but well as they quoted,

:) then, what good an output could be. some poeple can never learn. and I am one of them. and How do I prove it? well, You'd get to know from some of my upcoming posts, not in a sequence but often. well, this first one can interface nicely with this introductory post so I am just pasting it down here.

As a Kid, I've broken down many of the radios', transistors, hunting more mouse jumping inside whenever the signal' was'nt clear enough. then there was this little FM plate embedded inside, with one and only channel AIR FM 102.6 MHz. not only that I used to like those Presenters then RJs now, I was more or less been known in my family and friends' as the most talkative of all ( bina battery ka radio, well singing would take up another post so not mentioning it at the moment). I feel the comments showered by the people around, really turn up on you sometime in good or bad way, besides you knowing your capabilities. well I still take it that I talk a lot. but its not unstoppable any more. and I kind of know how and when to put breaks. but well, its all together a different story. So my liking of delhi doordarshan's news readers to the RJs and anchor's filled me much with the hopes and wants of being an RJ. I "was" fluent in both hindi and english, but as I used to listen on the radio, and my very recent introduction to the western music and since i wanted to learn more of it, I decided I should go for an English Audition.

I am not sure if its true but I think its a little hard to get a job on AIR then the local FM channels, and when I tried it first, none of the local channels were introduced, and 102.6 was at its peak. atleast i used to listen to it 24X7. there isnt a regular process of form filling at all india radio delhi. you can go and collect the form anytime (there office time offcoz), fill it at your own leisure and then submit it at your convenience. those two visits to AIR Delhi, were cool, I atleast had got little idea bout delhi and its bus system. since I used to like a lot of walking, over waiting for buses, i did that bit both the times to reach new delhi railway station form the center.

form submitted and I awaited the call. this was something sort of part time and of hobby so my life dint really wait and i was on. one fine day, I got the audition call, and was all set to reach AIR early morning. though I had no idea that its going to be an hindi audition or a mix one. well how did it matter though. seeing a bunch of close to 100 folks out there early morning, I dont remember it was a pleasurable experience, but a mixed feeling of an attempt to pursue a hobby and being part of something different and off liking.

we were given some scripts, (sure i had no idea of this), were asked to practice and then were to be called one by one in the audition room. I read

"She sells sea shells by the sea shore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells."

Yup, A couple of tongue twisters, and some lines and some 3-4 liners, few questions to be filled. I was such a novice, one girl approached me, offered to practice together, exchanged stranger emails like those you never see in your inbox. I am not sure, If I really did some practice, I dint understand well, I thought it would be more of questioning and we'd be given sometime.

12 Pm and the audition was started. I was some 40th in the queue, I heard them all, one digit to sum those all whom I found good, I was confident, I was even better then those, but no time there, when I was called. Entering in to room having nothing but a mic and someone asking you to stand there in, I saw the adjoining room had a couple of folks. Hmm standing, I got a little shiver. not thats comfortable huh.. Ms. Ritu Rajput (yes I still remember the name) asked me to read some lines in hindi, I believe had some bird mentioned in it. she asked me to read the same again. I could listen to my voice which did sound good, but hesitant. 2-3 minutes, and audition was over. I thought it wasnt the best, but comparing, I was still having a hope of making it.

and not that much of time AIR takes to send the results then calling up for the auditions. I did read that letter a 100 times, I wasnt shortlisted, I told myself am gonna try 11 times. (this index just comes to me from no where) and I am sure I'll do it. I got busy.

I did some recordings for IVR systems for banasthali, since the HOD liked my voice. and sometime I get one o two compliments from people on phone too. I did organize some programs of antakshari and anchored with my problem holding the mic. I am not that frequent of of radio any more. Bangalore RJ a few I do like but with the number of mistakes they make, I often think I should better be given a chance. the height of it is some of them are the program producers themself (Radio Indigo sure wont give me a job now :( ) Delhi I have no words, they sound like some taporis and specially the girls. san jose's RJ again, well I thought may be I can learn a bit from there. but no hopes. about overall.. song selections, libraries, the talks and the overall presentations, I am keeping my typical comments with my own

while back in delhi, I get some contact, from that satellite radio channel' s stall in my office canteen. I contact that person, send my resume, the HR haven't still replied to me. for now, I had decided, I am gonna start my own fm channel someday where I'd be the producer, Presenter, librarian and the owner.

  14. The post islong, and meaningful too.

One thing i want to say is,Inspite of allsaying mentioned in your post, only a versatile person changes the worldfor better turn.
be it versatile painter, LeoNardo Da Vinci,or Versatile writer Victor Hugo, or versatile inventor Louis Brail or Alva Edison,or a versatile scientist Newton,Galieleo or Einstien, Or the versatile singer Kishor kumar.

genius expands his feather uptothe maximum, and thats what life is all about

  15. Thank you Unpretentious Diva for the comment.
as said, there are two sides of a coin.. everything positive comes with a negative.. there is always an objective behind a deed. and these men you mentioned are no different. each one had something lacking in there life.. though ultimately they become famous. BUT because the "versatile" comes as a prefix to what they are..
    versatile singer,
    versatile painter,
    or versatile ....
